The problem

Your backup exists. Nobody has tried to restore it.

It's running somewhere. The IT contractor set it up two years ago and the email confirmation goes to an address nobody reads. The day you need the backup is the wrong day to find out it doesn't work.

Definition

A tested backup is one that someone has actually restored from in a controlled test, on a verifiable date. Most small businesses have backups configured but have never run a test restore, which means they don't know whether the backup works until the day they need it.

Sound familiar
  • We have backups. We've never tried to restore one
  • The IT guy set it up. He's not here anymore
  • I get a backup email every Monday. I have not opened it in months
  • Our backup is in the same building as the server it's backing up
  • I don't actually know if customer data is included
  • We had a ransomware scare. Two days of work was gone before we realized
How I fix this

A restore is the only proof.

An untested backup is a wish, not a plan. The Health Check looks at what's actually backing up, where it lives, who has the keys, and what hasn't been verified. Then we run a real restore. If it works, you sign it off and stop worrying. If it doesn't, you find out before the day you need it.
